What is the Best Jigsaw on the Market?

Making a circle with a jigsaw
Using a jigsaw to make a curved cut

What is the Best Jigsaw on the Market?  I find it is one that gives me firm control over the blade.  After all, a jigsaw is your go to tool when you don’t want to cut in a straight line.  Doing intricate cuts, curves, patterns and circles requires an efficient jigsaw and there are many to choose from that won’t break the bank.

You need to look for one whereby you can maintain control over the blade, has low vibration for a smooth performance, plenty of power, variable speed and it can bevel up to 45 degrees.  Other features like orbital action with different settings is particularly handy for accuracy over curved cuts and speed when needing to cut in a straight line.  what is the best jigsaw on the market

To begin with you’ll need to decide whether you’re after a cordless (for portability benefits) or corded (for longer use times) and of course what your budget is.what is the best jigsaw on the market

Bosch Power Tools Jigsaw Kit – JS572EK – 7.2 Amp Corded Variable Speed Top Handle Jig Saw Kit with Assorted Blades and Carrying Case Top Pick

Bosch Power Tools Jigsaw Kit - what is the best jigsaw on the market?

After years of struggling to make jigsaw cuts with an old Black and Decker my father gave me, I decided to go for a better tool. After reading loads of reviews on Amazon on other sites I opted for the Bosch JS572EK (size 7.2 Amp) and boy am I glad I did. Admittedly it was more expensive than the rest of the pack, but it was well worth the asking price. This thing will cut through anything and even used it recently to cut some laminate flooring when we replaced the carpet. I could never get a straight cut with my old Black and Decker but this really is like a hot knife through butter.

It does blow a bit of dust though, but compared to my dodgy old one, this works well. Has a nice long cord too (about 12 foot I think) and a sturdy case with room to hold extra blades. Should mention that although it has an internal light (the switch is on the handle) it doesn’t have a cut line guide  – but I have learnt to adapt as my old one doesn’t have this feature either.

Regardless, it is an excellent tool capable of fine results that you can use over and over again for a long time. I’ve lost count of how many projects I’ve used with mine and I’ve had it now for 5 years.

At the end of the day, getting a jigsaw is getting a tool that you need for particular projects. Eg you need to saw into a countertop to install a kitchen sink or cut out an intricate woodworking pattern like for a kid’s rocking horse, you’re going to need a jigsaw. Its versatile and you can use it safely with minimal instruction which makes it great for the beginner too. This one by Bosch allows you to adjust between four different orbital-action settings, to find the right blade strokes for smooth to more aggressive cuts. This is critical as it is more geared towards lighter work so you need the right blade if a more aggressive cut is needed. Also has a tool-less blade ejection lever so that you no longer have to touch hot blades when you want to eject them (and they can get hot!)

The Good:

  • Powerful 7.2-amp motor
  • Variable speed with SPM range 800 to 3,000 SPM with accelerator trigger to control operating speed
  • Precision Control with a double-roller system to minimize blade deflection
  • Bevels up to 45°
  • Tool-less blade changes with blade ejection to prevent handling hot blades
  • Orbital-action with four settings
  • Cutting capability on wood up to 5-1/2-inches, on aluminum up to 7/8-inch, and 3/8-inch on mild steel.
  • Counterbalanced low vibration for smooth performance
  • Carrying case
  • Adjustable dust blower
  • 1-year warranty

The Bad:

  • Only accepts T-shank blades (you can’t use the U-shank if you have these)
  • Although there is dust blower there is no dust collection attachment available. This is an added feature you need to pay more for (JA 1012)
  • Cannot use the old ‘screw in blades’ if you have these. Must use T-Shank blades only.

DEWALT DCS331B 20-Volt MAX Li-Ion Jig Saw (Tool Only), YellowTop Cordless Jigsaw

When buying a jigsaw, besides performance features, you really have two options; corded electric or battery powered. We picked the Dewalt DCS331B as our top pick in the cordless variety.

Why cordless? One advantage is the convenience of use. It’s mobile friendly so you can use it wherever without the need for a power source (assuming you haven’t forgotten the batteries!) Although the batteries (18 volt) have to be purchased separately, you can get the rechargeable sort so won’t have to keep getting new ones down the line. I like that you have the control over the speed of it as by pressing the trigger harder you will get a higher performance result. what is the best jigsaw on the market

It also has four orbital position settings to allow a variety and quality of cuts including strong wood, compressed wood, overlay ledges, plastic, metal and even nail-inserted wood. I purchased the Dewalt DCS331B simply for when I’m working on jobs outside and don’t want to stuff about with extension cords. The batteries are a little pricey – as you need at least a five amp to get any reasonable time of use (at least I do). Its great to be at your workbench and to pick it up easily and cut a dowel or piece of finish wood and simply plonk it back down again. It’s lightweight and easy to manoeuvre. Tilting the plate can be a little bit tricky to get it to release though. I took it over to my father-in law’s place to help him with some hardwood floors to make cuts around corners and a couple of heating vents and it made the job really easy.

Admittedly I’ve noticed some reviewers saying that on occasion the blade came out while cutting through lumbar, but for the most part, this seems to be few and far between. This hasn’t been my experience at all, but I am an experienced user I suppose. I even used my Bosch blades on it without any trouble. top cordless jigsaw

The Dewalt DCS31B is quite versatile as well. The shoe angle adjustment locks work well. I like the dust blower that directs air down the blade so dust isn’t getting in the way of your line of cut. It’s so annoying when that happens. The motor is pretty powerful too – just as much as my corded Bosch one. Overall this is a good, cordless jigsaw. Yes it would be better with a light on it, but I have managed to cut through a lot of lumbar with it so would still definitely endorse it.

The Good:

  • Use any 20V battery
  • Variable speed on trigger (0 – 3000 SPM)
  • Light weight (5.4 pounds)
  • Blades are easy to change
  • 4 orbital settings
  • Anti-slip comfort grip and trigger pull
  • Adjustable dust blower keeps line of cut clear of chips
  • 3 year warranty and 1 year free service warranty

The Bad:

  • Blades come out sometimes (according to some reviews I read)
  • T-shank blades only (but it is easy to change the blade)
  • No battery or charger included (or other accessories as this is sold as a ‘tool only’)
  • No LED light

Makita 4351FCT Barrel Grip Jig Saw with L.E.D. Light  Quality Barrel Grip

For those after a quality jigsaw that’s a bit more ergonomically designed for precision cuts, this Makita 4352FCT Barrel Grip Jig Saw is a gem that really does come with loads of added features. I actually borrowed this one from a friend to try out for the purpose of writing this review! Immediately I was impressed with its balance, weight and smoothness. The handle alone lets you put more pressure between the jigsaw and the surface you are cutting to minimize the amount of wobbles you get with other ones. Has adjustable speed on the side and at the back to give you better and neater cuts if desired. A lot more control then your basic model and you can tell the difference.

The barrel is nicely contoured too and is slightly smaller than the Bosch one (in terms of width) so it may be more user friendly for female users. It is also easier to control than the D-handle as your hand sits in a more comfortable orientation, leading to more control of the unit. What I found to be great about this unit was the cut. I used some finishing blades and I was able to make perfectly smooth, square cuts through some white pine I was using for a workbench.

I think I’ll find it tough going back to my one without the LED light cutting my path! Should mention that it does remind me of a Festool I used a local woodcraft that had great dust collection – but had a hard time rationalizing the price. Really the Makita and Bosch are on par in terms of operation and some would say that the LED light trumps it with the Makita.

If you’re not use to working with a barrel grip, it might be worth going to your local hardware store and trying it out as the experience is bit different to your standard grip. Also my friend said that the systainer style case shown in the picture was not the case his saw came in. This could have just been his, but thought I’d mention it.

Overall it’s clearly a quality product and about $70 cheaper than the Festool Jigsaw plus comes with a LED light. It’s smooth with minimal vibration and ease to change blades (which is kind of standard now with higher quality jig saws). Should note the switch is mounted on the side of tool and is just on/off with variable speed dial on the rear of the tool. Unlike my D handle jig saw, it doesn’t stop if you drop it or let go of the tool. This is a nice performing, mid priced jig saw by a quality manufacturer. If you’ve never had a pro grade jig saw before, you’ll be really pleased.

The Good:

  • Collins coping foot works great on it
  • Variable speed dial (800 – 2800 SPM)
  • Built in L.E.D light
  • 6.3 Amp motor
  • “Tool-less” blade change system
  • Built in dust blower to clear the line of cut
  • Cover plate
  • Tool case
  • Anti-splintering Device
  • Anti-vibration technology
  • Blades (B10, B13, B22)
  • 1 Year warranty

The Bad:

  • No dust collector (can buy a dust collection nozzle for around $4 though)
  • T blades only
  • Vacuum kit sold separately
  • Cord could be a little longer
  • 3 orbital settings (which is good – but many like the Bosch have 4)
