How to Remove Liquid Nails – Step by Step Instructions

One thing has to be memorized well: silicone is not washable with water while it is in a liquid state! There are several ways to remove liquid nails, and usually, they require some actions regarding softening the adhesive and scraping it off.

For liquid nails removal, the heat is not enough. You will need an SOS kit including the heat gun, putty knife or scraper, nylon or wire brush, safety gloves, windshield cut-out wire, and other materials you can use to ease the process of removal.

Step 1.

First, you need to heat the adhesive using an electric heat gun. If you do not own one, you can use a blow dryer for the same effect. The other method includes applying the petroleum jelly or mineral spirits on the surface but it will take around 12 hours to a day for this to work plus you cannot use those chemicals on vinyl, plastic, and color-coated surfaces as well as tub settings and varnish.

Step 2.

Now scrape off the liquid nails using the putty knife or scraper. To ensure this works, you need to heat the adhesive constantly to get it softened.

Step 3.

Lastly use mineral spirits, baby oil, or similar vegetable-based compound to remove any remaining and persistent remnant.

Alternative method:

If you want to remove building materials that are bonded together you can also use a windshield cut-out wire or music wire. In that case, we suggest using safety gloves to protect the hands. Cut a wide piece of wire and start pressuring and working it under the edge of the material intended for removal. After a repeated “back-and-forth” moves, you will see how pieces of adhesive are falling apart.

You can use a screwdriver to prop open the gap and ease the removal of the adhesive. Continue doing that until you separate all the pieces. At the end of the process, apply step 3 from the previous method.

You may also be in a situation where your skin accidentally came in contact with liquid nails. In that situation, removing depends on the type of the used adhesive. For solvent-based adhesives, you can use vegetable or mineral oil from your kitchen and gently rub it on the skin. For latex-based adhesive, warm water and soap will suffice.
